Modern Filipino Alphabet

After learning some basic Tagalog words I feel like it’s about time we went over the Filipino Alphabet. To some of you this may seem a little pointless but it will come in handy when you want to spell or pronounce any Tagalog word.

But before we begin a little history about the Filipino alphabet will help you appreciate this topic. We will begin in 1940 with the introduction of the Abakada alphabet which was used for the Tagalog-based Filipino national language.

Abakada consisted of only 20 letters. Each pronounced the same way as in English except NG which is pronounced like nung.

However, in 1987 they replaced Abakada with the modern Filipino alphabet which consists of 28 letters. Each letter in the alphabet or alphabeto in Tagalog is called tikit or létra. And each letter is either classed as a vowel called patínig or bokáblo or a consonant called katínig or konsonánte. In addition each letter is pronounced in the same way as in English except for Ñ which is pronounced like enje.
