10 Basic Tagalog Words

Hey, you made it the third lesson. I’m so proud of you. Keep up the good work and soon you’ll be able to understand simple Tagalog conversation. I know in the previous lesson we went over basic Tagalog greetings and how to count to 10. So today we will be focusing on 10 common Tagalog words that you will constantly hear.

We have all experienced moments when someone has helped and we want to express our gratitude. In English we will commonly say thank you but here in the Philippines they would say samalat instead.

Next we will learn how to answer simple yes or no question. If you want to respond by saying yes you will simple say oo or oo oo. But if you want to respond by saying no you will say hindi.

However there will be situations when you will want to respond to questions by saying maybe or whatever. In this scenario you will say baka for maybe and anoman for whatever.

There will also be times when you will be asked questions like, how many of you want to go shopping? Or How many cakes do you have for sale. Normally you can respond by saying isa or dalawa or any other number. But there may be situations when you want to respond by saying none. In this situation you can simple say wala which means none.

A common occurrence I have observed is that Filipinos struggle to understand and listen when another person is talking. In English when this happens we will respond by saying sorry, excess me or pardon. But they will respond with ano which means what in English.

Two more common words you will constantly hear are ako and ikaw. Ako meaning I while ikaw means you.

So after hear these nine unfamiliar words I decided to end with something easy. Let’s say you want to agree with what somebody just said. Well in here in the Philippines all you need to say is okay which means okay in English.
